Ara Lucia is an artist and director who makes photo-fables: photographs of invented worlds that tell a story. This is her gallery. Her work and studies combine a background in choreography, theatre, book arts, photography, and psychology.
In November of 2008, as she began development of her next photo-fable, Ara was deeply disturbed by the passage of California's Proposition 8, illegalizing same-sex marriage there. Seeing Prop. 8 as a cruel attack on a basic human right, she felt an overwhelming need to respond. As an artist, it made sense to fight back in the best way she knew how -- through her work. And so began We Vow.
Says Ara of the evolution of We Vow: "The woman ... would be racing in the woods, and then stop and dig in the earth to uncover a sacred book. She would be stopped by a man in military dress, and then another woman would intercede. I began to imagine what such a book contained, and what secrets the woman knew that would interest the government ... then the whole Proposition 8 issue hit ... at this point, I began to see the two women getting married, and the military man stepping in to try to end the ceremony..."

Berrien Springs, Michigan is the location of Ara’s studio and also the hub from which she launches local adventures, maps out creative explorations, and dreams about her next trip abroad.
She still shows her work to her 86-year-old grandmother, who taught her composition and aperture settings when Ara was hardly big enough to manipulate the lenses.
Keep up with Ara at Between the Shots, where she blogs about her life, her art,
the creative process, gender issues and politics.
